In 2025, Italian universities have significantly intensified their academic partnerships with African institutions, marking a new era of international collaboration and knowledge exchange. Leading this movement is the ACHIEVE-IT project, coordinated by the University of Parma and funded by the European Union’s NextGenerationEU initiative.
The project brings together 37 African partner universities and focuses on enhancing internationalization, joint research, and the development of advanced academic programs. Activities include student and staff exchanges, collaborative research, and the creation of innovative educational modules tailored to local development needs.
In parallel, the UNITAFRICA Alliance—an initiative involving 21 Italian and 78 African universities—aims to foster bi-directional mobility, advanced skills training, and mutual education.
This alliance supports over 590 exchanges for students and staff, with opportunities for master’s and PhD students to engage in research, thesis work, and specialized training across both continents.
Moreover, the Italian Higher Education with Africa Foundation, comprising six prominent Italian universities, has launched virtual mobility programs and advanced professional courses for African researchers and lecturers.
These programs are designed to strengthen the resilience of African higher education systems and promote interdisciplinary research in areas such as resource management, agri-food, energy, and cultural heritage.
Italy’s Mattei Plan further reinforces these efforts by offering fully funded scholarships to African students, supporting studies from undergraduate to doctoral levels in fields critical to Africa’s development, including biotechnology, engineering, and renewable energy.
These initiatives are not only bridging educational gaps but also contributing to local economic growth and sustainable development, while addressing migration challenges by empowering young Africans with advanced skills and opportunities.
Through these comprehensive exchange and cooperation programs, Italian universities are positioning themselves as key partners in Africa’s academic and socio-economic transformation.
