European Union and South Africa: New Steps for Health and Education

During the European Union–South Africa Summit, European and South African leaders announced a series of new programs and investments aimed at strengthening health systems, expanding access to education for children and youth, and promoting social inclusion in the African country. The meeting was attended by officials from the European Commission, the European Council, and the South African government.

One of the highlights is the launch of the Global Gateway Trade and Investment package, which includes public and private financing and loans to drive sustainable growth, job creation, and social resilience.

A significant portion of this package will be allocated to expanding vaccine production, strengthening the pharmaceutical supply chain, supporting the energy transition, and investing in digital and transport infrastructure.

In the field of health, the partnership provides support for local vaccine manufacturing, access to medicines, and digital solutions for pandemic preparedness, aiming to achieve universal health coverage and protect especially children and vulnerable groups.

In education, the EU and South Africa have reinforced collaboration on innovation projects, digitalization, teacher training, and the inclusion of girls and vulnerable groups, based on initiatives such as Coding and Robotics, Education for Employability, and rural assistance programs.

The joint declaration also highlighted both parties’ commitment to promoting human rights, equality, democracy, and multilateralism, recognizing the central role of education and health in sustainable development and reducing child poverty.

Additionally, the programs include initiatives to strengthen community participation and the empowerment of women and youth, promoting gender equality and social inclusion in both rural and urban areas. The cooperation also covers the development of integrated public policies aimed at improving the quality of life for vulnerable populations, with a special focus on children at risk and communities affected by socioeconomic inequalities.
