AfDB and Germany Announce New Energy and Private Sector Initiatives

The African Development Bank (AfDB) and the German government have announced new strategic initiatives in Abidjan to expand energy access and boost private sector growth in Africa. Central to the partnership is the “Mission 300” plan, aiming to provide electricity to 300 million Africans by 2030 and increase funding for youth entrepreneurship programs.

Germany, as the main shareholder and top contributor to the African Development Fund’s 16th replenishment, is reaffirming its role as a key partner in Africa’s sustainable agenda. The announcement brought together over 90 representatives from AfDB, Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), GIZ, and KfW, highlighting a strong commitment to impactful social and economic projects.

Planned actions include more financing for renewable energy, support for regional energy integration, and strengthening National Energy Compacts. The cooperation also promotes youth entrepreneurship, especially through the Build 4 Skills program and Youth Entrepreneurship Investment Banks.

A key milestone was the signing of agreements under the Alliance for Green Infrastructure in Africa (AGIA), bringing together AfDB, Africa50, the West African Development Bank, and KfW to accelerate green infrastructure projects. These initiatives reinforce resource mobilization and regional integration, particularly within the African Continental Free Trade Area.
