Germany Extends Antarctic Research Program to 2030 for Climate Insights

Germany has reaffirmed its dedication to polar science by extending its flagship Antarctic research program, the Infrastructure Priority Programme “Antarctic Research with Comparative Investigations in Arctic Ice Areas” (SPP 1158), through 2030.

This renewal, granted by the German Research Foundation (DFG), ensures that German scientists will remain at the forefront of international Antarctic research, with a clear focus on interdisciplinary collaboration and advancing climate science.

The renewed program will address four central research themes: the dynamics of climate system components, responses to environmental change, connectivity and exchange in polar systems, and a deeper understanding of polar processes and mechanisms. Over 60 targeted research questions underpin these themes, aiming to clarify Antarctica’s role in the Earth system and to provide answers to pressing questions about global climate change.

The program provides German researchers, especially those based at universities, with access to Antarctica’s unique environments and advanced research infrastructure. This includes logistical support from renowned partner institutions such as the Alfred Wegener Institute, the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources, and the German Aerospace Center.

A core element of SPP 1158 is the training and development of early-career scientists, ensuring that the next generation is well-prepared to address the complexities of polar research. By promoting international cooperation and supporting innovative, interdisciplinary projects, Germany’s renewed Antarctic program will continue to make significant contributions to climate science and environmental stewardship on a global scale.
