Austria has been deepening its bilateral relations with North American countries, consolidating strategic partnerships with both the United States and Canada. This strengthening is taking place across several key areas, including trade, security, justice, and diplomacy—reinforcing Austria’s role as a vital link between Europe and the Americas.
With the United States, relations have reached new heights. Since 2019, Vienna and Washington have maintained an annual strategic dialogue covering cybersecurity, justice, culture, and international cooperation. The most recent meeting, held in December 2023, reaffirmed both countries’ shared commitments to supporting Ukraine, combating disinformation, and addressing antisemitism. Austria also permits the use of its territory for U.S. counterterrorism missions, highlighting a strong security collaboration.
Economically, the United States is now Austria’s second-largest export destination, reaching a record €16.2 billion in 2024—a 10.1% increase from the previous year. Imports from the U.S. amounted to €7.7 billion, securing the U.S. as one of Austria’s top trade partners.
Regarding Canada, although trade volumes declined in 2024—exports totaled €1.6 billion (down 5.9%) and imports €598 million (down 16.2%)—the partnership remains steady. Diplomatic and academic cooperation continues, with active exchanges in higher education, cultural programs, and bilateral investments.
Through these developments, Austria reaffirms its geopolitical position as a bridge between continents, advancing not only commercial interests but also shared democratic values and strategic alliances with its North American partners.
