BioNTech, Bristol Myers Squibb in $11 Billion Cancer Immunotherapy Deal

BioNTech and Bristol Myers Squibb have announced a global strategic partnership for the co-development and co-commercialization of BNT327, BioNTech’s investigational bispecific antibody targeting multiple types of solid tumors.

BNT327, which combines PD-L1 and VEGF-A targets, is currently being evaluated in several clinical studies, including phase 3 trials for small cell lung cancer, non-small cell lung cancer, and, in the future, triple-negative breast cancer. More than a thousand patients have already been treated with the therapy in clinical investigations.

Under the agreement, the companies will equally share the costs of development, manufacturing, and global profits from BNT327. Bristol Myers Squibb will make an upfront payment of $1.5 billion to BioNTech, in addition to up to $2 billion in non-contingent payments by 2028. BioNTech may also receive up to $7.6 billion in regulatory, commercial, and development milestone payments if the drug achieves certain objectives.

The collaboration aims to accelerate clinical development and expand the indications for BNT327, positioning it as a new standard in immuno-oncology for hard-to-treat solid tumors. The companies may also develop BNT327 for other indications and in combination with their own therapies.

This partnership highlights the trend of major strategic alliances in the biopharmaceutical sector, particularly in oncology, where the combination of scientific expertise and financial resources is essential to speed up the introduction of new therapies to the market and expand treatment options for cancer patients worldwide.
